Anthropic ID verification, and the route without it
Anthropic's help center says it is "rolling out identity and business verification for a few use cases": a government photo ID, possibly a live selfie, and for organizations the registration details, through Persona. This page quotes what that article states, then the other route to the Claude models by API: an email address, a top-up, a key.
What the help center states
From Identity verification on Claude, dated 2026-08-11 on the page, read 2026-10-31. Nothing here goes beyond that page.
Who is asked
The article says a prompt may appear "when accessing certain capabilities", during "routine platform integrity checks", or for other safety and compliance measures. It does not name products, and it does not say whether existing API use is affected.
What it asks for
An individual: an original, physical, government-issued photo ID (passport, driver’s licence, state or national ID card) and a phone with a camera for a possible live selfie. An organization: the same plus its legal name, address and business registration number. Photocopies, screenshots, mobile IDs and temporary paper IDs are not accepted.
Where the data goes
Persona Identities runs the check and holds the ID and selfie; Anthropic is the data controller, can review records on Persona’s platform, and says it does not store copies of the images. The article states the data is encrypted, used only to confirm identity, not used to train models and not shared for marketing.
What it does not change, per the same article: a failed attempt can be retried inside the flow, a help form is available after the attempts are used, and account bans remain tied to repeated Usage Policy or Terms violations with an appeal form. The article gives no retention period and says nothing about declining the prompt.
